LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS 2010-2011

Charles Witenhafer Scholarship-  This scholarship requires the recipient to be a graduating senior of Buckeye High School, accepted at an institution of higher education, demonstrate involvement in school/community activities, and show a sense of maturity.  One $1,000 award

will be given to a qualifying candidate.  

 

John Mack Liverpool Township Scholarship- Open to residents of Liverpool Township.  Student must discuss financial need along with high school honors received (or will receive).  See guidance for more information.


Kenneth and Helen Alexander Scholarship Fund- The Alexander’s were lifelong residents of Medina County.  Their scholarship fund is a gift from their hearts and represents the love and commitment they had for their community and the Buckeye/York School District.  Although they

had no children of their own, they enjoyed the company and friendship of the young members of their neighborhood and school.  Each scholarship is valued at $2,000 with 2 scholarships awarded each year; one male and one female student.  The recipients must be seniors at Buckeye High School and reside in the district; must have a 3.0 GPA, must have participated in at least one volunteer community service activity, must demonstrate financial need; and the recipient must have been accepted at a college or university.  


Letha E. House Scholarship- This scholarship is available to a Buckeye senior interested in Horticulture, a related field, or another science related field. Applicants must discuss their high school science courses taken, career goals, and along with other field related questions.  


Litchfield Scholarship & Vincent Yambrovich Engineering Scholarship- Open to residents of Litchfield only.  Applications and further information available in the guidance office. 


Medina Blanking/Shiloh Industries Scholarship – Four scholarships up to $1,500 each will be awarded to Buckeye students.  Applicants must explain how their education has contributed to who they are today, why they want to go to college, and discuss a person they look up to. 


MTD Scholarship- Candidates must be residents of Liverpool Township and a student at Buckeye High School.  The student should be enrolling in a Bachelor’s Degree program with preference given to engineering, computer science, business or other technical fields.  Value of the scholarship: $5,000, broken down in the following manner: $1,000 per year if the student is enrolled in a 5-year engineering/technical degree program - OR -  $2,000 the first year, $1,000 per year for the next 3 years if enrolled in a 4-year engineering/technical program.  


Oscar & Hildegard Thiele Scholarship-  This scholarship is given to Buckeye seniors in remembrance of the parents of Oscar and Hildegard Thiele who were always interested in education and knew the value of it.  A scholarship is available to students with at least a 3.0 GPA. (EXCLUDING #1 and #2 in the graduating class) An interview is required. 


Patrick M. Pozderac Scholarship- Eligible Buckeye seniors must be participating in the Fine Arts program at Buckeye High School.  The applicant must be accepted at a college or university with plans of majoring in the health care field.  This may also include social work, special education, or health care administration. 


The Valley City Citizenship Award- Was established by the Chamber of Commerce to be awarded to a Buckeye High School senior. Candidates must reside in Liverpool Township and be planning post-secondary education at an accredited college or university. The scholarship will be payable to both the student and the institution.  This scholarship does not necessarily go to the individual with the highest grade point average.  It is awarded to that individual who best represents Buckeye students, who participates in school functions and activities, and who is active in community projects.  It exemplifies that person willing to put forth extra effort to help someone else or the community. 


Three D Metals, Inc. Scholarship- A $1,000 scholarship is available for students planning on majoring in a field that directly benefits children: Teaching, Child Care, Pediatrics, or Social Work. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or better. 


Michael Fulton Memorial Art Scholarship- $1000 stipend offered each spring to a qualified candidate selected from all applicants by the Fulton family.  Eligibility requirements: 1) Graduate of Buckeye High School, 2) Must be a current full-time student at college/university/art school, 3) Classified at least Junior standing in college, 4) Art education or visual arts major (ceramics, glass arts, drawing, fashion design, painting, textile arts, sculpture, jewelry making, printmaking, crafts, metal crafting, graphic design, furniture and interior design, and more), 5) Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5, 6) Completion and receipt of application form.  APPLICATION

WENDY’s Heisman Scholarship – This award is available to male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership.  The first 41,100 students that complete an online application will also win a Wendy’s gift card.  Visit www.wendyheisman.com to apply.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship – This scholarship provides financial assistance to students throughout the nation who have financial need and exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Scholarships will range from $2,500 to $20,000.  Visit www.horatioalger.org/scholarships to apply.

COCA-COLA SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION- Eligible high school seniors are able to apply for $3 million in college scholarships: 50 scholarships for $20,000 and 200 scholarships for $10,000.  To apply go to www.coca-colascholars.org and click on Coca-Cola Four Year Award for Seniors.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards - This award recognizes students who have made a difference through engaging in volunteer activity.  Students in grades 5-12 are eligible applicants.  State honorees receive $1,000 and National honorees receive an additional $5,000.  Visit www.principals.org/spirit to apply.

Dominion’s Strong Men and Women Contest – Are you interested in a writing contest in which you could possibly win $1,000 and a new laptop?  Then log on to www.dom.com and search the keyword “strong” for more information.

Ohio Strong Men and Women: Excellence in Leadership – Juniors and Seniors are eligible to win a laptop and and/or monies by submitting a compelling story, as a well written essay, about the achievements of an outstanding African American.  The winners will read their essays at a special awards program in Cleveland on February 11th.  Please see guidance or visit www.dom.com, keyword “strong” for more details.

Cleveland Browns Marion Motley Scholarship – Students who are interested in pursuing a long-term career working for a professional sports organization in any varieties of capacities may be eligible to receive a four-year renewable $2,500 per year scholarship.  Visit www.cspohio.org for more information and to complete your application.

Elks National Foundation’s 2010 Most Valuable Student - Elks National Foundation will award 500 4-year scholarships to the highest rated applicants in this year’s competition.  The application covers the student’s work experience, community service, honors and awards, leadership, citizenship, and family income.  Visit www.elks.org/enf/scholars to apply.

NRA Civil Rights Defense Writing Contest – The theme for this year’s essay is “The Second Amendment to the Constitution: Why it is important to our nation.” You can be eligible for prizes ranging from $100 to $1,000 in savings bonds.  Forms and additional information can be found at www.nradefensefund.org/writingcontest.aspx

AXA Achievement Scholarship – High school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school, the community, or the workplace are eligible for scholarships in the amount of $10,000 and $25,000.  Please see guidance for an application or visit www.axa-achievement.com

MENSA Scholarship Contest – Students of a participating Mensa local group who will be enrolled in an accredited US institution in the fall are eligible to apply for awards of $300-$2,000.  Visit www.mensafoundation.org/scholarships for details.

Profile in Courage Essay Contest – Interested candidates must write an original and creative essay of 1,000 words or less that demonstrate an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles of Courage.  Cash awards range from $500 - $5,000.  Visit the Profile in Courage Award at www.jfklibrary.org.

BGSU ACTION Scholarship – Scholarships are available to high school seniors who are attending Bowling Green in the fall and are considering teaching either secondary or middle childhood science or math may be eligible for this scholarship.  Eligible participants must be Ohio residents, an incoming freshman in the fall 2011, have a minimum gpa of 3.0, and have minimum ACT 20 or SAT 920.  Scholarships will be awarded up to $5,200 per year.  Visit www.bgsu.edu/action for details.

Ohio Township Association – To be considered for this scholarship you must reside in an Ohio township, complete a 500-word essay, complete an application, and have two letters of recommendation.  There are two scholarships, Academic Achievement and Local Government Achievement, which are both worth $1,500 each.  Please see guidance for an application.

North Coast Browns Backers Scholarship – This scholarship is intended for any senior student who participated in an athletic program at a Medina County high school who is planning to go on to higher education of some type.  Selection will be based on community involvement, character, involvement in athletics, and a letter of recommendation.  One $1,000 award will be given.  See guidance for an application.

Phi Delta Kappa 2010 Prospective Educator Scholarship – This scholarship opportunity is for high school seniors who intend to attend a college and major in education.  There will be two $500 scholarships awarded this year.  Please see the guidance office for an application.

Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Scholarship – Eligible applicants must be a senior in high school who parents or legal guardians are members of Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative, and presently reside in a home receive electric services from them.  Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to one senior boy and one senior girl.  There will be runner-up awards as well.  Please see guidance for an application.

KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program – This program is about you, your aspirations, and the perseverance to succeed. It is offered to seniors planning to attend a public in-state college or university. Selected students are eligible to receive up to $20,000 to complete a bachelor’s degree program. Visit www.kfcscholars.org for more information!

Peter Galassi and Franklin B. Walter Scholastic Award – Eligible students must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement as indicated by high school grades, test scores, and awards. One student from Medina County will be awarded this scholarship.  See guidance for an application.

Ohio University Women’s Club of Greater Cleveland – High school senior women who will be attending OU in the fall are eligible for this scholarship.  Applicants must have a non-weighted cumulative gpa of 3.5 and obtain atleast a 25 ACT or 1140 SAT.  Visit guidance or www.ouwomen.org for application materials.

Summit Chapter Ohio Credit Union Scholarship – To qualify for this opportunity you must be a senior in high school and plan to participate in post-secondary studies, including professional, vocational, and academic not limited to colleges and universities.  Two $1,000 and one $1,500 scholarship will be awarded.  See guidance for an application.

CAVS/First Merit Scholarship – All graduating seniors who intend to pursue a post-high school education are eligible! Entry includes a 500-word essay on the following question: “What’ s the most important lesson you’ve learned up to this point in your life and how do you plan to apply that lesson going forward.”  See guidance for an application.

AFA Teens for Alzheimer’s Awareness College Scholarship - AFA is offering an annual $5,000 scholarship and $500 and $250 scholarships to runner-ups to college bound students. National Co-Op Scholarship Program – The National Commission will award 155 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000/renewable to seniors who plan to participate in college cooperative education at one of the Partner Institutions. Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award- Girls who demonstrate a budding entrepreneurship, are taking the first steps toward financial independence, and are making a difference in their school and community are eligible for award monies up to $10,000. Cavaliers/Majestic Steel USA Scholarship – Graduating seniors who intend to pursue a career in manufacturing through Cuyahoga, Lakeland, or Lorain Community College are eligible to apply.  There will be four $2,000 scholarships this year! Visit the guidance department for an application.

Medina County Show Biz Scholarship – Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to seniors who plan on furthering their education by majoring in the performing arts.  Criteria for award recipients will be

based on contribution to MC Show Biz Company, financial need, background in the performing arts in high school, and college major.  See guidance for an application.

Clarence H. Horn Scholarship - This scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolling at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, who plans to major in the field of accounting, teaching, or a related field. Please see the guidance office for an application.

Delmar Graff Scholarship – Eligible applicants must be enrolling at an Ohio college or university next year and major in the field of music education or art education.  Please see the guidance office for more details!

Harold A. and Louise C. White Scholarship – Eligible applicants will be enrolling in an Ohio college or university majoring in the field of education.   There will be one scholarship awarded to a Buckeye high school student.  See guidance for details!

Margaret Ford and Lloyd Smucker Scholarship – Interested students must have achieved a 3.0 GPA at the end of their 7th semester in high school and the applicant’s family must demonstrate an

economic need.  Please see guidance for additional details.

Stephen F. Joseph Memorial 4-H Scholarship – This scholarship is for students who have exemplified qualities throughout high school such as leadership, community service, and academic achievement. Student must be pursuing an education at an accredited university or trade school.  Awards will be up to $1,000.

Fields of Learning Scholarship – This essay contest will revolve around the theme “Something I learned related to high school football.”  It is not in any way limited to just males or football players.  The essay must be between 500 and 1,500 words.  Please visit the website for additional scholarship guidelines at www.fieldsoflearning.com

Junior Women’s Civic Club – All female students who have devoted time to volunteer service may apply. You must have a 2.5 GPA and plan to attend an Ohio college or university.  Three $2,000 scholarships will be awarded.  Please see guidance for an application.

Orrin R. Findley Scholarship Fund – Are you a child, grandchild, niece, or nephew of a current or retired lorain county educator? If so, you may qualify to win a college scholarship.  Scholarships are

available online at www.lorcorta.org or in the guidance office.

Women’s Network Judith Resnik Scholarship – A $1,000 scholarship (renewable for up to 4 years ) will be awarded to a young woman graduating from a Northeast Ohio area high school

student who has been accepted into a science, engineering or math bachelor program in the fall.  Medical fields are excluded from this award.  Please see guidance for an application.

Buick Achievers Scholarship Program – The scholarship is for individuals who will be enrolling for as a full-time freshmen at a 4-year college or university. The applicant must be planning to major in science, technology, engineering, math, business administration, finance, marketing, or design and be interested in a career in the automotive or related industries.  Scholarships up to $25,000 a year will be awarded.  Visit www.buickachievers.com.

Gannon SEECS Scholarship – This provides need-based academic merit scholarships to students of engineering or computing sciences at Gannon.  This award provides an on average award of $6,500

per student, per year.  Please visit www.gannon.edu to apply for admission and become eligible for this great scholarship opportunity!

James Kura 2010 Memorial Scholarship – Students who reside in Ohio, have a 2.5 minimum GPA, and have been accepted by an accredited 4 year school are eligible to apply.  Applicants must write an essay that addresses a specific legal question and it will be judged by members

of the O.A.C.D.L.  For more information visit the guidance office.

Columbia Community Foundation Scholarships – If you are a resident of Columbia Township then you may be eligible to for this scholarship!  You must be planning on attending a post-secondary

Medina County Farm Bureau Scholarship – Applicants must have a desire to further their education beyond high school in the field of agriculture, horticulture, farm economics, animal husbandry, soil & water conservation, or forestry.  Scholarships ranging from $500-$2,000 will be awarded.  See guidance for an application.

Marion Stroud Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship awards up to two $500 awards each year. To apply, you must be a current high school senior accepted into an accredited training program in the field which may provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities.  See guidance for more information and an application.

Need a Lift - The American Legion provides an online booklet with lists of scholarships, grants, and loans at www.needalift.org for which students may qualify.  Ohio Association of Career Colleges & Schools Legislative Scholarship – There are over 280 scholarships available ranging from $2,000 to $12,110.  Applicants must be Ohio high school

WISE Scholarship Program – Women In Sports and Events was established to provide scholarships to women who are graduating seniors with career interests in the area of events or sports and are pursuing 4-year degrees in sports management, communications, physical education, business, or related fields.  Visit www.wisecleveland.com for an application.

AAA Ohio Auto Club Scholarship – If you participated in the AAA School Safety Patrol you may be eligible for this scholarship.  Interested students are required to write a 500-word essay on how being a member of the Safety Patrol has influenced you.  Ten $1,000 awards will be given out this year.  Please visit the guidance office for application materials.

William D. Squires Scholarship – Ohio high school seniors will be eligible to receive one of 12 awards in the amount of $3,000, renewable for 4 years.  This award is primarily based on need and eligible applicants will have an EFC from the FAFSA less than $8,000 and a minimum 3.2 gpa.  Please visit www.wmdsquiresfoundation.org for an application.

Medina Sunrise Rotary Scholarship – All students who have been involved in community service are eligible to apply.  Applicants must describe a situation in which they have demonstrated putting service above self.  One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.  See guidance for an application!

Lodi Community Hospital Health Career Scholarship – Eight $1,000 health career scholarships will be awarded to local students who are pursuing a career in the medical field at a 4-year college or university. One male and one female will be selected from each school district.  See guidance for additional requirements and for an application.

Medina County Retired Teachers Scholarship – This scholarship will be awarded to two students who are already enrolled in a college or university and graduates of a medina county high school.  Qualifying students must demonstrate commitment to careers in education and who will be juniors or seniors during the school year following the scholarship. Medina County Art League Scholarship – Eligible applicants must be planning to continue their art education in college.  Students must have an art portfolio to compete for this scholarship.  See guidance for further details.

Ohio War Orphans Scholarship – This program awards tuition assistance to the children of deceased or severely disabled Ohio veterans who served in the armed forces during a period of declared war or conflict.  Please visit the Ohio Board of Regents/State Grants and Scholarship Department or the guidance department for an application.

STOP the Hate: Youth Speak Out Essay Contest – Now is your chance to win up to $50,000 towards an Ohio college or university tuition by speaking out against violence.  Visit Stopthehate.maltzmuseum.org for more information and other essay requirements.


UT Blue and Gold Scholar Award – This scholarship is a four-year, renewable award that covers TOTAL cost of tuition and general fees, after state and federal aid are applied.  Eligible recipients must attend an Ohio high school, be accepted to The University of Toledo, submit an ACT or SAT score, have atleast a 3.0 gpa, file a FAFSA, and show Pell Grant eligibility.  Visit utoledo.edu/admissions/scholarships/bluegold/html for additional information!

University of Akron’s Choose Ohio First Scholarship – Student success in mathematics program will provide undergraduate scholarships to incoming freshmen who intend to pursue a degree in
